@drjoshuawolrich: There’s more nuance to this conversation but I wanted to start here. More to follow. #arianagrande #bodyimage #outrage #petal #ariana
As a child of the 90s/2000s I entirely disagree. The women I saw on TV and on magazine covers made me feel obese and ugly and because they were all thin I felt like I needed to be thin and that was a huge catalyst for my many many years of anorexia.
Do I think Arianna is to blame, no, sadly a lot of famous women are now looking this unhealthy once again and claiming it was achieved with healthy lifestyle and choices influencing a while new generation in to a hell I and so many others barely came out of. Her body and health should absolutely be getting this scrutiny to make the message clear that it is very dangerous. Can people develop these issues without these kinds of influences, absolutely they can and do, seeing all these super skinny women is a massive problem .

do people not think that someone like Ariana are also a victim in this?

This take is bullshit. Nobody said Ariana single-handedly causes eating disorders. The problem is normalizing extreme thinness as “healthy” to millions of impressionable girls. Ariana herself called this her healthiest body that message can absolutely be criticized. Eating disorders are complex, but pretending media and thin-ideal exposure play zero role is just factually wrong.

I think the bit that bothers me about it is we don’t know why or how she lost so much weight. It could be stress, an ED, by accident, a health issue- anything! None of which will be improved by mass critique. Also as far as I’m aware (happy to be corrected) she’s not promoting unhealthy behaviours like selling flat tummy tea like some thin celebs and influencers- she’s just existing in a body. To me, the conversations about this being an unhealthy ideal for teenage girls to aspire to should be a conversation for parents and schools to have with the children in their care, and for the media to show and celebrate a diverse range of bodies. Saying Ariana specifically owes us any kind of body feels incredibly harsh and harmful to a woman who could potentially be in some form of crisis.

Eating disorders are contagious. They're social. We can't help Ariana, but we can send a clear message to her young audience that she is not okay and they shouldn't copy her appearance.

Oh my god I am so tired of men pitching into this discussion. What you are trying to claim is literally disproven by the existence of marketing. Ariana grande is not just a private person. She is a brand. And as such she has a huge influence on young girls and women’s body image and beauty ideals. That’s the issue. Not a witch hunt bullying a poor poor young woman. No one says she is evil. In fact most people speaking out have had an ED themselves and speak up out of worry bc if no one does then how does that help her? But we are also sisters and mothers who have a responsibility clearly pointing out the fucked up control men through the beautify industry and celebrities are wielding over women’s bodies. Interesting that speaking up about this seems to be mainly an issue for… you guessed it: men like you. I wonder why. Go patriarchy.
