The threat of homelessness, and a social stigma that doesn’t ever leave you. If you are jailed and can’t afford to pay bail, you lose your job, your car, your house, it disrupts your familial relationships potentially severing them. It also applies pressure to your loved ones to help fund your bail. If you need medications you aren’t getting them. They don’t care. I work with houseless folks and hear this same story too often. Quite a few which are on psych meds that were disrupted when they were jailed causing them to regress in their treatment, rendering them unstable & homeless. They end up caught in a cycle. It’s a nightmare. This is why there are advocates that work on reform bc it harms the poor the most

There is no difference. And the jail/prison system literally profits off of our bodies, guilty or not. From transferring “prisoners” to another facility, to even “housing prisoners”, it’s all about money/profit, nothing more, nothing less.

Arraignment has to happen by the next business day. The prosecutor has to prove there’s probable cause and if they can’t, the judge can deny their right to press charges. Bail isn’t buying freedom. It is providing collateral to increase the likelihood that you will come back and face the charges. When you go back to court, you get your money back.

Not even if you DO the crime, only if they determine you’re a person they think might have done the crime - because you’re being held while you’re also presumed to be innocent. I’m pretty sure the state isn’t picking up the your trauma related healthcare bills once you’ve been freed, but that’s a whole other rabbit hole

Well don’t forget if you are picked up by ICE you often don’t get that option. They often move you out of state and limit your ability to access the legal system. Oh and best not be female.

Bail is just a privilege for the rich, and a burden for the poor that will have to pay high interest for that privilege. You should either be detained or not. Same with private jails, they should not exist, that only incentives bribes to judges, and makes the whole system addicted to profits. And nevermind inmates forced to work for less than two dollars a day, it should be a wage almost parallel to minimum wage, otherwise we create a system that just literally wants slaves.
