@chicanaguera: Chicano English, a real, fully developed dialect of American English with its own patterns of pronunciation, rhythm, vocabulary, and grammar! Many people who speak Chicano English are native English speakers. Some are bilingual, and some do not speak Spanish at all. And while Chicano English grew through generations of contact between Spanish and English, it is not the same thing as Spanglish. Like every dialect, it carries history. It reflects community, culture, migration, resistance, and belonging. It also varies by place—Chicano English in New Mexico may not sound exactly like Chicano English in California or Texas. We don’t all speak alike, but our ways of speaking are still patterned, meaningful, and worthy of respect. Too often, people hear Chicano English and make assumptions about someone’s intelligence, education, or immigration status. But the problem is not the way our communities speak. The problem is the prejudice attached to our voices. Our English is not incorrect English. It is not lazy English. It is not English that needs to be “fixed.” Sources and further reading: • Carmen Fought, Chicano English in Context • PBS, “Talking with Mi Gente” • UCLA, “Where Chicano English Gets Respect” • Otto Santa Ana, “Chicano English and the Nature of the Chicano Language Setting” #chicano #chicana #hispanic #mexicanamericans #burque
