@phlwire: Philadelphia is spending $3.5 billion to build an entire neighborhood from scratch, next to 30th Street Station. It's called Schuylkill Yards — a 20-year project from developer Brandywine Realty Trust and Drexel University, aimed at building offices, apartments, and public space specifically to attract tech and science companies. More on this: the project broke ground in 2017, with the first phase, a public park called Drexel Square, opening in 2019. The West Tower on JFK Boulevard is now complete, with office space and roughly 300 apartments. Construction is currently active on the East Tower, expected to finish in 2027. The most ambitious piece of the plan is still years out: a proposed skyscraper over 1,000 feet tall with 70 floors, designed by SHoP Architects — the same firm behind some of New York City's tallest buildings, including the Brooklyn Tower. That final phase isn't expected until the whole project wraps, around 2035. West Philly is such a war zone it needs more than a few buildings. They are trying to make this the new Hudson Yards.

“But what about the schools!” I’m begging yall to learn that different money goes to different places. It’s the same reason your boss doesn’t use your salary to pay for schools.

we have more than enough luxury apartments that are gonna be a minimum of $1800/month. please give us more low income housing AND adjust the threshold!!!! I make almost 40k/yr but I still live check to check due to debt and bills and shit being overpriced but I make "too much" to qualify for any assistance 😭 I like living in West but damn, I would like something a little more comfortable

This has been proposed for almost 20 years now. We’re probably not going to see anything close to those heights—everything has been scaled back.

The cornerstone of this project (the tower) isn’t getting built for a very long time. There are no commercial towers under construction because there is very low office demand.
