I think the emotional attachment to the outcome makes it harder, but it really is there for a reason. the person I am advising also can't avoid the outcome either. so it isn't the closeness that makes self advice hard. it is a different weight to the cost factors that someone else really isn't presenting even though it is part of it.

relationship endings are a big example. it is so easy to give people blanket advice based on single or few points, but two people's lives being entangled means it is never actually that simple. the advice may be, but the cost comparison is real.

for example: the advice to leave may be sound advice, because staying has a very high cost. but there is a cost to leaving that might be close, equal, or higher. the source of the advice doesn't change that.
