@edjupickleball: I recently got to meet the legendary @andreidaescupkl and it was mind blowing to see in person the power he was able to generate on his serves. He broke down for me the difference between a flat swerve and a shape serve. A flatter serve might travel faster, but if it stays on a flatter trajectory, your opponent can simply back up, give themselves more time, and hit the return from a comfortable height. A serve with more shape uses topspin to get the ball to DIP after it crosses the net, but at the cost of some speed. That becomes especially useful on a competitive court where there’s more space behind the baseline. The more shape you can create, the more you can push your opponent back AND still have the ball drop into the court. But apparently…I had the opposite problem >.> I actually had a little TOO MUCH shape. My contact point was getting too low, which forced me to swing more low → high and made it harder to drive through the ball with as much pace. Andrei’s adjustment was pretty simple: Lower contact → MORE shape, LESS pace Higher contact → MORE pace, while still keeping enough shape By getting my contact point a little higher, I can drive through the serve more aggressively while still creating enough topspin to make the ball dip and push my opponent back. The goal isn’t necessarily the MOST spin or the MOST power. It’s finding that combination of PACE + SHAPE that makes the serve as uncomfortable as possible to return.
