Watching a baby grow and develop new movement skills is an exciting journey. From lifting the head during tummy time to walking, running and jumping, every new ability shows how the child’s muscles, balance and coordination are developing. Here is a general guide to important movement milestones: 👶 2 MONTHS — HOLDS THE HEAD UP DURING TUMMY TIME Many babies can briefly lift and hold their head while lying on their tummy. Tummy time must always be supervised, and the baby should be awake. Babies should still be placed on their backs for sleep. 👶 4 MONTHS — PUSHES UP ON THE FOREARMS During tummy time, many babies begin pushing up on their elbows or forearms. They may also hold their head steadier when supported in an upright position. 👶 6 MONTHS — ROLLS AND SUPPORTS SITTING Many babies can roll from their tummy to their back, push up with straighter arms and lean on their hands while sitting. Because rolling can begin unexpectedly, never leave a baby unattended on a bed, table or other raised surface. 👶 9 MONTHS — SITS WITHOUT SUPPORT Many babies can sit without support and move into a sitting position. Some may also begin moving around by crawling, shuffling or rolling. Not every healthy baby crawls before walking. 👶 12 MONTHS — PULLS UP TO STAND Around the first birthday, many babies can pull themselves into a standing position and walk while holding furniture. Make the home safer by securing furniture, covering sharp corners and keeping dangerous objects out of reach. 👶 15 MONTHS — TAKES A FEW STEPS Many toddlers can take a few independent steps. Their walking may still look wide, unsteady or awkward at first, which is common while balance develops. 👶 18 MONTHS — WALKS INDEPENDENTLY By this age, many toddlers can walk without holding onto a person or furniture. They may also begin climbing onto and off low furniture, so close supervision remains important. 👧 2 YEARS — RUNS AND WALKS UP STEPS WITH HELP Many two-year-olds can run and walk up a few stairs with assistance. Always hold the child’s hand or remain close. Never allow a young child to use stairs without supervision. 👧 30 MONTHS — JUMPS WITH BOTH FEET Many children can lift both feet off the ground when jumping. Give them a clear, safe place to practise away from slippery floors, sharp objects and stairs. 🧒 5 YEARS — HOPS ON ONE FOOT By around five years, many children can hop on one foot. This requires more advanced balance, coordination and muscle control. Hopping on one foot is not generally considered a 36-month milestone. Remember that milestones are guides, not strict deadlines. Children develop at different rates, and a child may gain one skill earlier while taking longer with another. For babies born prematurely, development may be assessed using their corrected age during the early years. Ask your child’s healthcare professional how to calculate and use corrected age. Speak with a qualified healthcare professional if: ⚠️ Your child loses a skill they previously had ⚠️ Your baby seems unusually stiff or floppy ⚠️ One side of the body moves differently from the other ⚠️ Your child is not meeting one or more expected milestones ⚠️ You are worried about the way your child moves ⚠️ Your child does not respond normally to sounds, faces or interactions Do not force a baby to sit, stand or walk before they are ready. Avoid baby walkers with wheels because they can cause injuries and do not teach safe walking. Give your child plenty of supervised floor time, safe opportunities to move and loving encouragement. Parents and caregivers know their children best. If something concerns you, do not wait—discuss it during a clinic visit and ask about developmental screening. Save this post, share it with other parents and follow NurseMary for more responsible child-health education. 💚 This information is for general education only.
