AI can write the email. But can you tell whether the email is actually good? That’s becoming a much more important distinction. We’re increasingly surrounded by tools that can produce polished writing, ideas, presentations, analyses, and strategies almost instantly. The output can be grammatically perfect. Logically structured. Professional sounding. And still somehow be… bad. Maybe the tone isn’t quite right. Maybe the idea is obvious. Maybe the email technically says everything it needs to say but doesn’t sound remotely like you. Recognizing that difference requires skills that become more important, not less important, when AI does more of the producing. Judgment helps you decide which AI suggestions are actually worth pursuing. Imagination lets you bring something to the process that goes beyond the obvious answer. Standards keep you from accepting something simply because it looks polished. Empathy helps you anticipate how another human being will actually receive what AI produced. And taste is that difficult-to-define ability to recognize when something just isn’t quite right. The interesting part is that AI can actually help you develop these skills—if you use it differently. Think before asking AI what it thinks. Bring it your half-developed idea instead of always asking it to start from zero. Challenge its first draft. Ask it to critique its own answer. Compare multiple versions and force yourself to explain why you prefer one. The goal isn’t to prove that you can do everything without AI. It’s to make sure that as AI gets better at producing the work, you keep getting better at evaluating it. Because generating something in ten seconds doesn’t automatically make it worth using.
