“If there was no trend there would be no outlier”, so why does your outliner exist?

Yes! Americans have a particularly hard time with this. And we have to help people understand that their individual experience isn’t indicative of the reality of the whole.

Its because the american education system doesn't force kids to take statistics. And no child left behind has failed to enforce the critical thinking skills required to understand these things.

I Love My Hot WIFE!!! :
As a statistician by trade, the general lack of statistical and even basic mathematical literacy bothers me so badly. I saw data that showed that gas prices, on average, are $1 higher across the country this year versus last year for August ($4 now, $3 then). Someone in the comments sarcastically said, “Oh no, my 13-gallon car is going to cost me an additional $13 to get gas, whatever will I do without $13?” And I couldn’t help myself, I said, “You’re fine with paying 33% more for the exact same amount of the exact same product?” When you look at it as a percentage, you CANNOT ignore how insane it is. But without math/stats literacy, you won’t figure it out until it’s far too late.

I'm also willing to bet the same people using religious gulf states' supposed low crime rates to defend religion are the same people terrified of Muslim immigrants bringing "sharia law" to america and all the "oppression and violence" that supposedly comes with it

If a structural environment keeps producing bad actors, then there exists a fundamental design flaw within such a system. Except it just isn't a design flaw.

Isn't it illegal to be secular in the Gulf states? Meaning the data in relation to the religious rate would be inaccurate?

I don’t understand why is it so difficult to understand that outliers are outliers

You just don’t know how to argue with people who operate in bad faith and believe in nonsense. It’s a whole different tool set and skill

yes :
statistics don't always capture context so if an anecdote is an outlier because of a similar circumstance to your own it's still worth listening to

Ive seen a few ppl online and 1 person irl say that they dont wanna wear a seatbelt because what if they get in a wreck so bad that their car is on fire and gonna explode and their seatbelt is stuck so they cant get out. While if they didnt have it on couldve been flung from the car land in like a bush or water and lived. Because apparently this happened one time 😭😭

At work we sometimes dig into outliers because of the potential to learn from them or follow up but yeah. It validates the trend. Statistical literacy. Anecdotes are fun and can get you started on an analysis but no one would ever use one to disprove the conclusions.

I feel like AP statistics should be a required class for every single person. It is ridiculously easy to get a 5 on the exam and is one of the few classes I have actually retained most of the information from

I was playing Balatro today and I had reserve parking and a blue print. Those fuckers wiffed on multiple 5+ held face cards. (Like losing a coin flip 10 times in a row). Outliers happen all the time, we gotta recognize them.
