On May 7, 1915, the ocean liner was torpedoed by the German submarine U-20 off the coast of Ireland. The impact was followed by a second explosion, the exact cause of which is still debated. Listing heavily to starboard as water rapidly flooded her interior, the ship disappeared beneath the Atlantic in just 18 minutes. From the luxurious first-class rooms to the corridors and cabins, everything happened too quickly for many passengers to escape. Nearly 1,200 people lost their lives.
