That’s why we patented cooling in makeup setting sprays. The cooling stops melting, helping to resist heat and humidity. The cooling also slows excess shine….we didn’t know that history. Thank you so so much for sharing. Awesome!!!!

my mom was a cosmetologist. She got her initial license in 1962 and later trained as a comorist under Vial Sasson. She always had me keep a wet washcloth in the freezer to pat my face after I applied my makeup.

would imagine the ice helps with the hardening of the waxes in the formula

So interesting I feel like if I did the ice cube It would just get patchy or ruin all my hard work I would be too nervous 😂

And Evian spray came out in 1962 so I guess it was Audrey’s routine in the later half of her popular career.

I was taught that the reason it works is because when you lightly dampen powder products it “cements” it, creating a mask-like barrier. I cannot vouch for the accuracy, but it’s always worked for me even with modern powder products.

Well, I had my makeup done in two occasions (very blessed) from a very famous MUA from my City in the 90s and in early 2000s (she worked for mexican tv networks and also very popular with mexican artists) had this technique, she used all the products, minus the lip products WET, she used pancake foundation, seal it with compact powder applied with a wet make up puff, used the Chanel, Dior, Lancome, MAC, Covergirl, Revlon and Jordana eyeshadows wet too: she mixed them with cold water and make them a paste and then applied them and blend them with a wet eyeshadow brush and a wet eyeshadow sponge eyeshadow applicator, blended the blush with a wet makeup sponge(the white triangular ones) and used that black eyeshadow from MAC wet like eyeliner and the makeup stayed in place for a very long time(for my quinceañera it stayed until I took a bath the next day 😅 I was very young, at 15 in the 90s I didn’t know about having to take off your makeup before bed) and for my college graduation it lasted all night and I danced a lot, because we had a huge party organized in our honor, after this I also took some auto makeup courses with her, in no way I’m a MUA, no even close but I did learn a lot from her, she explained that makeup products, because they have waxes and oils, when they get in touch with cold water they form a seal, at least is what she learned in her days in Make Up Academy, but it doesn’t worked with all products, if something had talc, well it repelled water and did not mixed well, so she knew which products to use and show us how to identify them(if a eyeshadow or a Face powder “made” the water to look like a little ball, then it was not good to be mixed) in that case the recommendation was to seal it with a wet paper towel.

I did the second one for years! Never used to moisturise my skin before foundation (I have oily skin) and I powder the hell out of my face! My makeup would look the exact same the next day when I’d been too lazy (and drunk) to take it off at night

I spent many sweaty, nights moshing in punk bars, and to this day there is no better setting spray than a good dose of hairspray!! I was talking about this with a client when she asked about my setting spray. She asked if that would be better than what I was using because she wanted her makeup to last through her daughter’s wedding. Haha.

Water was actually used to seal the powders used in heavy makeup application! I learned this from a theatrical makeup artist. Clowns use this technique too! It almost activates the powder and when your face dries it is sealed allowing your makeup to last longer and it helps with color retention for stage makeup.

My Nan instead of the ice cube she’d soak a wash cloth lay it out flat in the freezer let it freeze and dab her face that way. I think there’s actually a clip of her doing it in one of my families old home videos 😅
