The US doesn't seem to fully understand the consequences of this. This dramatically inconveniences one individual they disagree with but other than that it gets them relatively nothing in return. It signals "comply with the US or be cutoff" but the natural long term consequence isn't compliance, it's distance. It's forcing the rest of the world to find alternative financial infrastructure to allow operating around the US. Long term this is the US deliberately giving up its control of global financial transactions. It's remarkably short sighted and stupid.
