We were told “start ABA” ummm we don’t have ABA around us - their response “autism speaks has a map of ABA centers”. Oh that dr appt was $1700….

The best advice, I have depending on your child’s age. Is early intervention is key. My son is 19 years old he has autism and is primarily non verbal. So I have been where you are now. The other advice is don’t be afraid to be the “butthole” when dealing with doctors, insurance companies, whoever. Because there is no one who will fight for him harder than his mama will. You’re the only expert on your child. It’s hard, you will have bad days. But just remember you’re not alone.

Im a physical therapy assistant (granted in geriatrics) and I was so horribly upset with myself after having my autistic son and realizing that a large majority of healthcare providers have NO IDEA WHAT AUTISM LOOKS LIKE! My therapy education showed me nothing about what it's really like or how prevalent it is. now in nursing homes I work I just see so many undiagnosed autistics who just have behavior and mental health diagnoses. they were missed in this system and it hurts my heart.

How old is he? There may be many resources available in your area, but that doctor isn’t one of them. A neurologist to start would be a great idea.

First don’t compare your child to anybody else’s Autistic child. They are all different from each other. Second I have seen some very severe children progress to higher functioning so don’t believe your future will be what you see now. Don’t expect the schools to do what needs to be done for him or her. Research and fill in the gaps where the the school is lacking. Figure out what makes them happy because what you think will make them happy usually isn’t the case. Don’t try to make them a normal person make them the best autistic person you can. Lots of people will give you advise but you know your child the best.

Yup same. Just wait til you get to the IEP. Doctors, educators, therapists - they know nothing. You have to educate yourself and be their fiercest advocate. When they gave us the diagnosis they literally said to “give up all the hopes and dreams you have for your daughter”. And I told them absolutely not. I will never give up on her. If she had cancer, they would never tell a parent that!

My son is 8 now. He was diagnosed right before his 4th birthday I got the same pamphlet and the dr said call us if it gets worse…… um what ?!!!!!

The lack of support, knowledge or inability to answer what I thought were very basic questions was baffling to me. Most of what I have learned has been from this app followed up with me reaching out to more drs that don’t know a whole lot. I know there are good drs and therapists out there. I just haven’t found any in my area.

Same happened to us but the said sign up for SSI. I said OK but where can I get him help, she said yeah just sign him up for SSI. And thats why we have to do most of it alone.

My favorite was when I asked if they had any recommendations for aba therapies near us, they said you can google it. OH or my daughter started Leucovorin and no one mentioned she shouldn’t have dairy with it, certain multivitamins, fortified grain products,etc. I had to find this all out by myself 😭

Yep same thing happened to me over 10 years ago! Best thing I can tell you is dive in, dont compare your kiddo to another as they are all different, make sure your doing the same thing they are doing at school/therapies at home and vise versa, find a support group as facebook groups can become catty, ABA isn't the only thing out there as there is also DIRFloortime which can be found on ICDL.com and YouTube, Im always here to chat!
