Such a good question and I feel like authors tend to approach this differently! I have used friends/family as betas in the past, and I’ve also paid for betas I found on freelance websites like Fiverr. I’m not sure I’d fully recommend either of those methods because sometimes people close to you have a hard time giving honest feedback, and it’s likely better to save your funds for more costly things that come up later on like editing. Nowadays if I need new beta readers, I find them on social media in spots where my audience is likely to hang out (like genre-specific subreddits). The good news is that once you find betas that enjoy your writing, they’ll often make themselves available to be betas for you in the future, so the work of finding them eases as you write and publish more.

I have done beta work. I think it is helpful when the author gives the beta guidance of what they are looking for. Some authors want grammar, pov help etc, other want to ensure the story flows or that the character development tracks etc. I would say guidance. Sometimes if you have an outline of the story helps the beta what to expect from the story. A comment system for a beta is also helpful

I've done multiple beta reads and one thing I cannot stress enough is to try to find some that generally read your type of content/genre as well as some who that is not their primary reading genre.

I’m very honest with my feedback, but I always try to make it constructive and respectful. If something isn’t working for me, I’ll explain why and, when possible, suggest what could make the scene or character stronger. I’ll also point out the moments that genuinely worked for me so you know what to keep. [email protected]
