@therapytothepoint: If you’re tired of cancel culture turning every mistake into a permanent identity, you need to understand the psychology behind it. All or nothing thinking reduces complicated people to either good or bad. It can make accountability feel simpler, but it also removes context and leaves little room for genuine change. People should be held accountable for bad behavior. But when we reduce an entire person to one mistake without considering whether it reflects an ongoing pattern or how they respond afterward, we leave no room for growth. This does not mean every action should be forgiven or that everyone deserves continued access to you. It means accountability should consider the behavior and person’s response to it. You can believe in consequences while recognizing that human beings are more complicated than “good” or “bad.” #cancelculture #cancelcultureistoxic #criticalthinking #nuance #allornothingthinking
Narcissists have black and white thinking. Society has become more narcissistic. That is all

Also, "cancel culture" doesn't work or exist. Most of the "cancelled" white influential men are fine. 🤷🏻♂️

what's really funny about cognitive dissonance is it doesn't even have to be the topic that's complicated. if the individual's emotions about the topic are complicated, the same dissonance can occur even if reality is very straightforward and simple (cough cough Candace Owens over Tyler Robinson).

Yes. I’ve engaged in a few online debates & many opposing responses jump to a conclusion that does not follow causal logic - they disconnect the point I made from their own bias, and respond illogically. Some of it is ideological conditioning or media “brainwashing” right?

What’s funny is this video would not be allowed before Donald Trump was reelected. I’m not saying that he is anything spectacular or that I support him. But things got way crazy out of hand and his reelection was a pivot point

It’s mostly young people. Young people haven’t experienced life long enough to understand nuance.

Also keep in mind, some of the best level headed people have made the same mistake more than once or twice before figuring it out.

i think the pandemic and trump has really accelerated it, mass traumas for ppl on the left, which increases b&w thinking. it also ofc causes a lot of anger and many people became more aware of social issues during this time. participating in cancel culture gives an outlet for that. ppl have lost sight of what is actually effective & necessary vs what is just cathartic. there's a big difference between outrage & protest at the people in power vs dogpiling a random citizen who said something imperfectly. and many layers of complexity all along that spectrum.

This is prevalent in the autistic community because autistic people tend to struggle with rigid thinking as part of the DSM criteria and I am part of this too but I try my best to see the nuance even though black and white thinking makes it easier for me. This doesn’t mean it is not harmful (especially to myself) so thank you for bringing this up!

The scariest part is that the entire newer generation couldn’t recognize this in their minds, and they projected this black-and-white thinking onto everything in society and events. Most of them, online anyway, are extremely entitled to their moral high ground. Humanity has been like this for thousands of years, from burning witches to anything else we can think of.
