what gets me is just how much I DO understand it, and just how much I DON'T. I understand the desperation to feel loved, to not be alone, for human connection, for nonsexual and sexual intimacy, for a sharing of burdens and responsibilities, for a partner whenever and wherever. what I don't get is HOW that desperation is more important to people than independence, intelligence, and self love. how do so many people wholeheartedly claim someone's their soulmate, when they'll be broken up in months. how do they praise someone for being the best partner, solely because they do the bare minimum? how do they rely on love solely from familiarity, and treat actual beliefs and actions as secondary? how do you enter into a committed relationship BEFORE truly knowing someone? how do you feel comfortable not unpacking societal influences before you date, marry, and have kids? how are you so comfortable revolving your life around someone solely because you're attracted to them? why does attraction put someone above everyone else for you? why aren't platonic and non sexual relationships just as important? why is love permitting and excusing every bad behavior because you "love them", rather than only bettering each other through influence? I am NOT saying that all allo relationships are like this, but that dating culture tends to be like this overall, and being aro or ace just automatically makes you less likely to participate in it as directly or as society expects. Additionally, not that once you're physically attracted to someone you pursue them - I don't think allo people are animals - but I can't comprehend being attracted to someone without knowing them. A body is just an aesthetic object in my eyes, which only can become an object of attraction based on the brain that inhabits it. how can you want that from someone if for example they're just a mediocre or bad person? I understand this specific line of questioning isn't really fair and doesn't have moral answers, it's simply biological, but it confounds me just as much as the social aspects of dating.
