What does “choice” mean when someone else is holding the oars? In “Row, Row, Roe v. Wade,” Ariana, Kylan, and Myaan take a childhood nursery rhyme and turn it into an argument about bodily autonomy. The boat becomes the body. The oars become control. And a song about moving gently downstream changes completely when women are no longer allowed to determine the direction of their own lives. The poem moves between humor, anger, history, and fear, but one line carries the argument: “Women can’t row a boat when the hands on the oars are not our own.” That is the heart of the performance. Autonomy means very little when someone else gets to decide what happens to your body.
