My kid gagged on egg and I sat on my hands. Every part of me wanted to swipe it out of his mouth. But as a Pediatric Dietitian who has worked in a children’s hospital, I know there’s a risk with doing that. Swiping can startle babies and push food toward the back of the throat, which can increase the risk of choking. His gag reflex was doing exactly what it’s designed to do. The food stayed visible and kept moving forward, and you can hear him cough and keep breathing the whole time. That’s an airway protecting itself! Yes, he held that egg in his mouth for what felt like a full calendar year. Then reached for MORE egg as they do. I kept my poker face. Barely. He does have to ingest a little egg the first time to know if there’s a reaction, which is why allergens repeat multiple days in a row on our expert-made meal plan (made by actual pediatric dietitians and pediatricians). I know gagging, choking, and allergen intro can feel terrifying.
