The grime is going into the cushion though. The top might look better but its all in the fabric. Its like vacuuming carpet,yeah you get a lot of dirt but the vacuum just vibrates the dirt through the carpet. Try taking a piece of dirty carpet and put it on a tile floor and vacuum it and then pick up the carpet most of the dirt went through to the other side.
