@bee.jeweled.coop: 👇🏼Here are some tricks to get your chickens to lay in their nesting boxes! Sometimes new hens don’t immediately know where to lay their eggs. I found 2 eggs laid on the sand by Daphne, and when I saw her snuggling up in that corner, I knew I needed to step in. If you also have a hen who just won’t lay where she’s supposed to, here are some tips to redirect her: 🪺 Keep some eggs in the nesting box. If you don’t have laying hens yet, grab some fake ceramic eggs from the store. Eggs in the box will help them see that this is where they’re supposed to be. 🪨 If you find them laying in a specific place they shouldn’t, block that space off. I put a brick in the spot Daphne was laying to force her to find another place. 🖤 Make the nesting boxes dark and cozy. I painted the inside of mine black. Some people have hung curtains over the entrances to make the space cozy. ✨ Keep the nesting material clean and poo free! Hens don’t enjoy a poopy nesting box. 💐 Make sure you have enough boxes to avoid overcrowding. You should have 1 nesting box for every 4 chickens. 🐓 If you have a rooster in your flock, you might see him directing new layers too! 🚫 I do not recommend locking your chickens in the coop to force them to lay in the nesting boxes.
