Somewhere in Houston or outside of Houston? My daughter told me about it, she was interested in the course for her CSI but went with the medical field instead.

As a medical student who just had my first anatomy/cadaver lab in which we started removing the donor’s skin, it’s a very interesting experience… Grateful for the people who donate their bodies so we can learn how to save lives though.

My step-mom is donating her body for research. She has had cancer and other health issues and she hopes to be the part of cures. It’s great but I can’t….

As an anatomist, most of us handle this process with the upmost dignity. I use what is called a hard-fixed donor meaning they are preserved but not the same as an embalming. I keep the bodies “whole” meaning I never separate a limb or head. We do remove the skin and all organs for class, however everyone part is kept together. In most states there is a state anatomic board which oversees processes and use. My program has donors for one year after preservation. Once we are done, they are cleaned and organized, then returned for cremation. I will happily answer the questions anyone has to the best of my ability.

I went to the MERI medical center in high school where they donate bodies for science, it was a field trip… the lady pulled out a big table and laid her hands on on something that looked like a person. Well she proceeded to Whipped the blanket back with a huge 400 pound man laying there with a wrapped up head. I hit the ground head first and woke up in a big man’s arms wearing way too much cologne trying to force me to drink water and fanning me 😭😭😭😭

How do people in these professions not have a ton of trauma from things like this ? Genuine question.

I bet it did. I work in the medical field. I learned how to use some endoscopic devices in the ENT field on some cadaver heads. We were very appreciative and respectful to the individuals that were gracious enough to donate their bodies.

My mother’s “dad” was a truly awful person, and abandoned his family (one of the nicer things he did) when he died a few years ago, my mom was his only family and she donated his body science. She felt like well maybe he can be used for someone to learn something that will help someone, at least this way something good can come from such an AH. She later threw his cremains in the trash but that’s another story.

when a loved one was an organ donor, is there any way to find out what all organs were taken and where they went?

And then they donate the bodies they have used for science at the medical schools to the mortuary science or funeral service classes to practice on and then they are cremated or buried.

In college I was in a cadaver lab. None of the bodies had the tops of their heads or their brains. Those had all gone to the medical school to be studied.
