 When you dial someone, your phone signals the nearest cell tower to connect that number. The signal goes through the mobile network to an MSC, Mobile Switching Center, which manages calls across a region. It authenticates you using your SIM, then checks the HLR, a database that knows which part of the network the other person is currently connected to.
 The MSC finds Rahul’s location and signals the network in Chennai. His nearest tower is instructed to ring his phone. Rahul answers, and the connection is established.
 But how does the Delhi network communicate with the Chennai network? Through fiber optic cables running across the country. Light pulses carry the information between cities, and the same fiber connection carries the call throughout the conversation.
 Now your voice travels. Your microphone converts your voice into an electrical signal. An ADC converts it into digital data, which is compressed and split into packets. Those packets travel over the cellular network from your phone to the tower, through the network and across the fiber connection to Chennai. From there, they reach Rahul’s tower, travel wirelessly to his phone, and his speaker converts the digital data back into sound. And Rahul’s voice does exactly the same thing in reverse, at the same time.
