Ting, originally meant Time, or a specific timen. ergo a meeting place/gathering. The specific Ting he mentions in the video is the Allting, the AllThing. for even longer period local smaller Ting was normal

It's weird to hear it being directly translated into english. In Denmark we still kept the word for our parliament. We call it 'Folketinget' which directly translated is 'The People Thing'

living not so far from "Frostating" in Norway. it's considered the oldest of the things (before iceland). about the year 400 -600 ac it started. only it wasn't for a whole country but for a region. (not a historian here, correct me if I am wrong)

I think your story is mixing Sturlungaöld with the founding of Alþingi, there's a 200 year difference. The representative system set up over the years ended up with Sturlungar amassing voting power that lead to pledging to Norway.

I don't know Islandic or old Norse, but if you pronounce the word like TING, no "h" sound, it's litteraly what we still use as "parlament" in Norwegian, so i suspect thats closer to the original word than "thing" lovely video as always, so fun to see you travel around to these places

How come English translate “ting” as in “parliament”, “assembly”, “meeting” or “(criminal) court” to “thing”? 🤔 (Yes, “ting” has multiple meaning across the Nordics)

Norwegian here too pick on the topic 🤔 mostly guessing, but abit educated guessing 🤓 considering viking raiding culture and general population origin (modern-day Scandinavia), i find it kinda strange that the first recording of a ting was that late 🤔 i know the norsemen was settling inn all over Scandinavia a good couple of decades urlyer. for instance modern-day Trondheim used to be the capital of norway for a long time 🤔 not disagreeing with any of your facts here, but wonder what your knowledge on urlyer history of the Nordic 😗 many funny stories 😂👌
