How to stop worrying and start living What is it that we are worrying so much about? The mind is a sneaky thing. We can get these negative automatic thoughts or NATs that come from seemingly nowhere. They are intrusive and recurrent and can be a cause of considerable worry and distress. Here are four tips to help you live more and worry less Tip number one: Remember, just because you think it, it doesn’t mean it is true. Keep on saying this to yourself. Write it down on a piece of paper and put it somewhere where you can always see it. Tip number two. Live in the moment, in the here and the now. Be more mindful. If you think too much about the past and dwell on it, that can be depressing. If you think too much about the future that can make you feel anxious. Instead, try to be more mindful and live in the moment. Tip number three. Immerse yourself in nature. If you remain indoors your external world can be these four walls. So you shift your focus to your internal world, your mind and that can be disastrous because you are overthinking and ruminating. But if you immerse yourself in nature. Go outdoors to a park or to a lake you can shift your focus from your internal world where you are overthinking to the external world and be captivated by the beauty and splendour of nature. Tip number four: breathing exercises. When we worry and feel anxious, our central nervous system is activated especially the sympathetic nervous system and it goes on overdrive. Everything speeds up. Your heart rate, your breathing. By engaging in breathing exercises we can activate the parasympathetic nervous system which slows things down and we can feel more calm and regulated. Take a deep breath in over 2 seconds, then hold for 2 seconds then exhale for 2 seconds. Try that a few times and see how it helps to calm you down.
