@thediabetescollective: We know Leptin is a hormone secreted from fat cells, which regulate body weight because leptin's "job" is to send signals to your brain saying, "Hey, I'm full". But what if Leptin could be effective in more than just obesity treatment? That's why I sat down with world renowned Endocrinologist, and researcher, Dr. Irl Hirsch, to discuss Leptin and the treatment of hyperglycemia and diabetic ketoacidosis in Type 1 Diabetes. This is Dr. Hirsch's first public interview on his upcoming research plans, and I am honored to share his insights and plans for human clinical trials with you. It's important to understand the condition of type 1 diabetes doesn't simply mean deficiency of the hormone insulin. It includes Leptin as well. It's been proven that injecting Leptin into the brain has normalized glucose levels and eliminated ketones, but this has only been proven in animals thus far. It seems the medical community has spent the past 100+ years studying glucose metabolism via the liver, muscle, and adipose tissue. But, hasn't really understood how to study the brain, and that is what this is all about. Now the question is this: Can the human brain do a better job of controlling metabolism than other tissues? To learn more, you can read his publication on the "Unexpected role for the Brain in the pathogenesis of diabetic ketoacidosis" linked here: https://www.jci.org/articles/view/196357?utm_campaign=cover-page&utm_content=short_url&utm_medium=pdf&utm_source=content #t1d #Insulin #leptin

Thank you for sharing! I lost my pancreas in 2006 due to idiopathic pancreatitis. Harvested my own islets at the same time but became instantly diabetic due to low islet yield. Brittle diabetic now but low dose of insulin. Binders, receptors and signaling. 🤯
