@yuvaltheterrible: the only one i saw that correctly listed a common phrase that's actually a shortened version of its original was "money is the root of all evil" being "the love of money is the root of all evil" #english #language #linguistics #proverbs #explained
"Liar liar pants on fire. True true, the shirt is wet."

Same concept for backcronyms. People still think RAP stands for rhythm and poetry (it doesn’t)

violence is never the answer actually is shortened from the original phrase "violence is never the answer. it's the question and the answer is yes"

I actually do think stuff like this really matters, because it shows just how easily people fall for lies and disinformation.

“The original phrase was actually…” has become essentially a stock phrase to mean “the fact of life is actually…” it’s like they think that all morals and proverbs are objective facts of life that, after first discovered, are objective facts.

I kinda like the altered versions though. To me it shows that things don't always have to be what it looks like or that you can change how you think about something. Language is also alive and ever evolving and it makes sense that happens to commonly used sayings as well.

Besides, proverbs are made up anyway. Remixing phrases and themes has always been part of language and social development. It’s silly to argue over them. They’re quips, not pillars of reality.

the full phrase BTW is: "jack of all trades, master of none, but oftentimes better than master of one".
Yuval made it sound like there was no second part of the phrase, but there is. and its this. it only differs from his version by like two words
