“Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.” John 3:5 Nicodemus was a Pharisee, a teacher of Israel, and a man who knew the Scriptures. Yet when he came to Jesus, Jesus told him something that challenged everything he thought he understood: “You must be born again.” Jesus was pointing to something deeper than outward religion. Knowing Scripture, following traditions, doing good works, or having a religious background cannot by themselves give us new life. We need a transformation that comes from God. We need to be born of the Spirit. Our first birth gives us physical life. But Jesus speaks of another birth, a spiritual birth in which God changes the heart and gives us new life in Him. Christianity is not simply about becoming a better version of ourselves. It is about receiving new life through Christ. And just a few verses later comes one of the most beautiful promises in Scripture: “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16 The invitation Jesus gave to Nicodemus is still before us today. Not just religion. Not just knowledge. Not just good works. A new heart. A new life.
