Former McLean worker, and patient from a different facility… it’s a mental health system issue- McLean is actually one of the best. If that one closes we’re in HUGE trouble… that’s what’s SO scary. MCLEAN IS A “GOOD” ONE. THIS 👏 IS👏 THE 👏 BEST 👏 WE 👏 CAN 👏 GET!!!!!! Don’t close the hospital, change the system!

Yep and …. Susanna Kaysen was admitted to McLean Hospital in 1967 for eighteen months. Her experience there became the basis for her 1993 memoir Girl, Interrupted

Also, the best psychiatric hospital in the country. Not perfect by any means, but they’ve helped a LOT of people and saved a lot of lives. Also reminder that Girl Interrupted was during the ‘60s and Plath was there in the ‘50s - simply not comparable at all to the landscape of psychiatric hospitals in 2026

As someone who has worked in the metal health field I will say that people in that industry do NOT care. It’s all surrounded by money especially the PHP programs. Of course there are people who care but they will always get ruled out by the people who only care about making money.

How did anyone NOT see she was being abused? My first visit to my therapist- she asked “do you think you’re being abused?” I answered no, of course, but she kept going back to that question every time.

as someone from MA that had friends go to McLean back in high-school, using that facility and describing anything you got there as "treatment" is a farce. That place has only ever traumatized its patients never treat.

The fact that Massachusetts has some of the strictest qualifiers for state mental health licensure and MacLean still is what it is has me thinking you have to go above and beyond willful negligence to be that horrible as àn institution.
