@sarah.ascendant: What does the term “casual” even mean in commander? Doesn’t usually get you the game you’re after? #magicthegathering #magiccommunity #mtg #edh #commandermtg
I thought casual just meant nothing on the line. No prize or rank on the line. Non tournament setting.

Our "casual" pod is bracket 2, no infinite combos or win-cons! More concerned with spending time with our loved ones!

I have built into my Doom Prevails upgraded precon, a way to get infinite turns (Doom's Time Platform and Time Stretch). I see it as on theme with the deck, the ridiculous win plan of the villain.
In the 30-ish games I've played it, it's never triggered one time. But I let othe players know, and if they're concerned about it, I swap out Time Stretch.
I try to build ridiculous win con into all of my decks.

A casual game is when you play for the fun, not the competition. You play to win, but in a relaxed way where you might hold your punches to let a friend who hasn’t won a game yet, have his glory

To me casual is anything outside of a competitive event. You can still play to win and play sweaty decks, but without outside incentive, there’s no reason to be invested in the game besides socializing!

My group it’s about obscure commanders and weird cards and wincons … we all have fun surprising each other with new decks

ya for some reason casual lately seems to mean that you shouldn't run combos or any interaction lol. I have started to run lower bracket decks in bracket 3 pods so that people stop complaining all the time.

a bit disingenuous. a few really specific responses shouldn't poison an idea thats sort of self explanatory. we know what a casual game is NOT. and anyone saying some 2 card combo in the first 7 turns isn't being serious.

Casual to me is where winning is secondary, the point is for everyone to have fun. I try to balance and spread damage out evenly so no one gets taken out early. Everyone should have the chance to let their deck “do the thing” it’s meant to do

In my own experience, I feel like when the term “casual game” is being used, it’s truly up to your familiar pod you play with. My group agrees to the terms of typically playing somewhere between bracket 3 and 4, but we also all own at least 1 or 2 untouched precons so when we feel like bringing it down a level or playing with some new friends, we can enjoy it without being too optimized. Calling it a “casual” game will never have a definitive meaning, but can be looked at as a boundary that you set with the folk you averagely play with. 🙂

Playing a casual game initially requires playing a deck that is fun to play AND fun to play against. this is part of the problem with games being defined as casual or not, people have the most fun at different levels of play. Stax, mass land destruction, oops all counterspells aren't fun to play against. infinite combos typically aren't fun, because being the 1 billionth deck that wins with a 2 card combo. Also, EDH is an inherently casual format, and Commander by extension, there should be no tournaments for it. It was not designed to be a tournament format, players who cannot turn off their competitive mind made an internal competitive variant specializing in high level of play. Bracket 1 and 2 should be a seperate format from brackets 3+, that would eliminate about 70% of the need for rule 0 conversation.

I think conceptually, "Casual EDH" is a deck or pod that plays for fun, decks arent necessarily fine tuned to pull off combos or multiple interactions in a turn (for example a precon or slightly upgraded precon) or even have an ultimate boardgames they are trying to get to. CEDH is sort of the opposite, it is a fine tuned deck thats intentionally trying to win, doing so with a deliberate strategy or repeatable card interactions through their commander/pieces, ideally fast too. I think casual also, as you said, lets players take back misplays or missed triggers etc, where as in CEDH its strict.

casual for me, to have fun silly and interesting games, showing and sharing creativity and having fun with your friends, having a deck that lets you have fun while the other people are also able to have fun.

I’ve generalized “casual game” to mean that you still play to win, but not necessarily as quickly as possible. You give yourself and your opponents the ability to rewind their phases or even return a card to their hand that they didn’t quite understand. Very much a “are you sure, because it won’t do X effect if you play it now, it’ll only do Y” table philosophy. Give everyone a chance to achieve some shenanigans. Don’t play a blow you out to the water in 2-5 turns deck.

Power level shouldn't be part of it. We have a pod of 5 we regularly meet with for FNM, and it's all "casual" as in not a cutthroat, tournament level play or mindset. Don't grind an opponent into the ground, spread the removal around, an occasional rewind here and there. But we pay everything from precons to B4/B5. The power changes, but the mindset of the gameplay remains the same - have fun, let everyone play, don't take it too seriously. But I agree, power level and casual have become synonymous to a lot of people.

minimum 7-8 turns. not presenting a possible win before t6. everybody gets to "do the thing". and yes, lower power is casual. bracket 3 is probably not casual in most cases. all combos require 3+ cards and 10+ mana.

I maintain that no one online knows what on earth they're talking about. I'm gonna continue to "casually" inquire what people wanna play before I pull out a deck when I'm at the shop lol

I think the most common aspect of a “casual” game is allowing take-backs and missed triggers. Most of the other stuff is heavily based on the group

In a casual setting, I usually expect people to approach it like they would a board game. Some are more competitive than others, but if that starts to kill the vibe, then just tell them to take it down a notch and move on. A lot of the disconnect is really just poor social skills.

casual to me is allowing take backs/missed triggers, and avoiding salty plays. combos are a play style, but I get not liking 2card combos out of nowhere

if someone says casual, my 1st ? is what low level precon (unmodified in anyway) are you playing. I say it that way for 2 reasons. 1. because we know some precons come out beefed up, Timey Wimey is a good example of a beefed up precon and 2. I use precons for casual play because if its person built odds are there are a couple tricks up the sleeve. So yeah If were playing casual my group tends to play precons
