I hate how people speak about this show like it's incredibly cringe and lacking in nuance. when I watched pen15 for the first time I was ambushed with feelings I had know idea I'd feel, and tears I wasn't prepared to cry. it's a rare thing for a show to be able to do purposeful 'cringe', and comedy while also being this beautifully shot, vibrant, emotional thing. it's an exagerated coming of age show about girls in middle school. my heart absolutely breaks for Maya and Anna sometimes. I don't get how people are so mean to them, fictional or not. their friendship is written so strikingly beautifully, and the show harbours these occasional moments of quiet intimacy between characters that I absolutely adore. I'll be the person to say that the scene where the 2 girls are talking about their suggestive feelings together, in the dark, sort of coming to this realization that what they're feeling is completely normal and they're not these horrible perverse freaks they think they are is one of the most beautiful, intimate, charged and important scenes in the whole show. I think it's so pointless to discredit pen15 as a series because there's clearly an audience who feels it deeply. I don't get how it's funny to laugh at the idea of a 13 year old girl struggling with her identity as a woc. I love pen15 💔

as someone who is wasian but doesn't look Asian AT ALL, I relate to Maya sooooosooosooo much :( especially when she say the line "why does Japanese look good on her but not on me?" (at least I think she said that) growing up and not looking your own ethnicity is hard and it really sucks 😓
