The way he tried so hard NOT to be a wallflower. He wanted to interact and engage, Charlie craved connection.

The scene where he's talking to the doctor about noticing everyone's pain and not being able to stop it floored me when I was younger. It was the first time I had seen one of the things I struggle with be understood and represented.

He is the first character I ever saw myself in. A resilient but kind male lead, who is sensitive and notices people.

my favorite line is when Sam tells Charlie “You can’t put everybody’s lives ahead of yours and think that counts as love” Very much needed to hear that as a teen, and I still do need to remember it now!

Speaking of adolescent characters dealing with trauma, have you seen Speak by Laurie Haise Anderson? Or the film?

I started small; complimenting someone’s shirt at the grocery store. If someone dropped something and it turned a bunch of heads I would say “My fault!” or “Don’t worry. Nobody saw that.” Just a passing word that gave people the option to speak to me or not. Fast forward some time and I’m a social butterfly now. I’m here to tell you that MOST people won’t reject an honest approach. Have I been burned or embarrassed occasionally? Sure, but I don’t remember specifics because it’s just that rare and unimportant. Put yourself out there. Good people are waiting to be your friend, but they have to meet you first!

I watch perks a lot in highschool when I was going through a hard time not having friends or anyone to sit with during lunch. I couldn’t get out of my shell like Charlie but he made me feel like I wasn’t alone feeling the way that I did.
