Why are young performers expected to be available, charming, thin, polished, energetic, and emotionally accessible before they are old enough to understand what is being taken from them? What support remains after someone discloses depression, addiction, abuse, or grief and the press tour ends? Why do public empathy and compassion become most abundant after someone is gone? Hayden Panettiere was an artist, activist, mother, sister, and woman who kept trying to find her way back to herself. Her relationship with her daughter cannot be summarized by a legal arrangement. Her life cannot be summarized by the pain she survived. She was also full of private parts of herself no audience was entitled to know. This is what gets lost when we make a life into a case file. We confuse watching a person suffer with knowing what their suffering meant. Let the coroner determine the cause and responsible journalism report what can be verified. May the people who actually knew her grieve the woman, not the internet’s theory of her. The rest of us can practice one small act of decency in a culture that keeps confusing what it has seen with what it actually understands. We can stop treating the worst thing that happened to someone as the key to who they were. Hayden Panettiere was not a cautionary tale, a custody arrangement, a collection of wounds, or the sum of what she survived.
