It used to be… but even if it has a large gay community, it’s a small city so by shear numbers, cities like LA, Chicago, Dallas, Houston all have larger numbers of gay people just because their cities are far larger

I wish more queer-owned businesses were still open in the Castro. I don’t think people remember just how many dominant gay businesses there used to be in the neighborhood throughout the ’90s and early 2000s. There were clothing stores, shoe stores, and so many other queer-owned businesses. I used to get all of my shoes in the Castro and would make shopping trips there from New York in the early 2000s. So much of that retail has disappeared. The same clothing stores aren’t there anymore. The shoe stores aren’t there anymore, including the ones that used to be right next to Marcello's pizza shop. The Castro is still iconic, but I really miss the days when queer-owned businesses were such a visible and dominant part of the neighborhood’s identity. I still travel to San Francisco often today enjoying from Cincinnati on many trips and returning soon. Thinking to relocate and live there for a 3rd time in my life.
