On May 7, 1945, Colonel General Alfred Jodl signed the unconditional surrender of the German Wehrmacht . The Wehrmacht thus ended hostilities against the Allies on all fronts. The surrender took effect on May 8. Parts of the Wehrmacht had already surrendered earlier. However, the Soviet dictator Stalin demanded that the surrender be repeated in Berlin. The German commanders-in-chief of the Army and Navy , Keitel and von Friedeburg , and Stumpff for the Luftwaffe , signed the instrument of ratification of the unconditional surrender of the Wehrmacht on the night of May 8-9, 1945, at the Soviet headquarters in Berlin-Karlshorst (Pionierschule I of the Wehrmacht , now the Berlin-Karlshorst Museum ) .
