In March 2006, Nigeria conducted a nationwide population and housing census under President Olusegun Obasanjo, 15 years after the previous exercise in 1991. Organised by the National Population Commission (NPC) from March 21 to 27, the census aimed to provide reliable population data for national planning and resource allocation. . The 2006 census also introduced new technology into Nigeria’s population-counting process. Satellite imagery and GPS were used in preparing enumeration maps, while machine-readable forms and fingerprint identification technology were incorporated to improve data collection and reduce multiple counting. . In Lagos, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, then Commissioner for Science and Technology under Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, addressed the challenges encountered on the first day of enumeration. He acknowledged the initial confusion, particularly difficulties coordinating enumerators and supervisors, but explained that such challenges were expected. He also highlighted logistical support from local authorities and expressed confidence that operations would improve in the following days. . The final results placed Nigeria’s population at 140,431,790, with Lagos recording 9,113,605, a figure disputed by the state government. . Twenty years later, the 2006 exercise remains Nigeria’s last national census, following the postponement of the one scheduled for 2023. . . . #NigerianHistory #PopulationCensus #FemiHamzat #LagosState #NostalgicSoundNg
