Calling someone your acquaintance in English is a bit standoffish or distant… people often say friend or colleague (if you met through work). There’s not really an inbetween word that’s commonly used so people differentiate by saying a close friend or new friend and letting the other person read the dynamic. Also many people become friends quicker in certain cultures than others. From what I’ve seen, Japan tends to be much not socially distant than the US (where I am)

acquaintance is usually used when you dont really care for the person. like one comment said its used when you know someone you wish you didnt. like a coworker you dont really like.

An acquaintance is more for just someone you know, like you know their name and you’ve maybe talked to them once or twice in passing, but you don’t have enough information to know if you like them or not. A friend is someone you know AND like 😂 there is a difference between just “friend” and “best friend” or “close friend” which is often used for more serious long term/close friendships

I call everyone my friend so long as I don’t hate them. Do I consider them friends? Nope. but saying acquaintance is like purposely making a point that I don’t wanna know them. Even more so if I introduce somebody as someone I met recently or someone that I know.

When introducing someone it can be rude, alienating, and disrespectful, to refer to them as an acquaintance. If someone I don’t know is brought to a party/get together/mixer and they are introduced as an acquaintance I would probably wonder why they’re there and feel a large amount of distance and some discomfort. Americans are very friendly people, if a friendly person specifies that they are not your friend then it is almost like declaring an enemy. Or at least it is in my social circles. America is a big country so there might be different reasons depending on the state they are from
