On August 17, 1126, the relics of the third-century virgin and martyr were brought home to Catania from Constantinople. Nine centuries later, thousands retraced that historic homecoming in a 7.5 km pilgrimage through the city to Piazza Duomo. There, Saint Agatha’s skull was presented for the veneration of the faithful before being placed inside her magnificent reliquary bust. Her other relics were returned to the silver reliquary casket. Then came the culminating moment: Cardinal Parolin solemnly crowned Catania’s beloved patroness.
