You have a room full of different personalities, different challenges, different strengths, different levels, and different needs…and you are somehow expected to meet them all. But before they are students, they are children. They are someone’s whole world. They are growing, learning, struggling, discovering who they are, and carrying things into my classroom that I may never know about. I may not be able to pray with them, but I can pray for them. I can pray over their desks before they walk through the door. I can pray for the child who feels left out, the one who is struggling to learn, the one who needs a little more patience, the one who is carrying something heavy, and the one who doesn’t yet know just how capable they are. I can pray that my classroom is a place where they feel safe, loved, encouraged, and believed in. I can pray for wisdom and patience when I don’t know what to do. I can pray for a heart that remembers that every child in my room is more than a number, a behavior, a reading level, or a test score. So no, I may not be able to pray with them.
