Additional updates can also be found on our Twitter. David Chiem is a major character of Danganronpa: Despair Time. His title is the Ultimate Inspirational Speaker. David Chiem is a renowned Inspirational Speaker who has motivated many people through his uplifting speeches. As one would expect, David is a constantly optimistic personality who encourages those around him to keep on moving. His true personality may be more pessimistic and lazy than he lets on, according to some (unreliable) sources. Appearance David is a light-skinned young man. He has dark blue hair in which he wears two yellow hair barrettes and a yellow hair clip with a star on it. David has gray eyes with yellow stars in them. David wears a white shirt with the sleeves rolled up halfway, and a green bowtie at his neck. He wears black pants and black shoes. His pants are held up by a pair of black suspenders. In chapter 2, David breaks down during the trial and his appearance slightly changes. The stars in his eyes disappear and he removes his hairclip and runs a hand through his hair, making it more messy-looking. His tie is also undone and his shirt is unbuttoned slighty. Personality Pessimisic & Nihilistic - Beneath his sunny exterior lies a deep-seated pessimism, believing humans are inherently flawed and incapable of genuine change. This nihilism drives his later “evil” act; he mocks deaths and belittles others not out of pure malice, but to reinforce his worldview that kindness is pointless, as seen in his cruel remarks about Arei’s death despite secretly valuing her. Manipulative Performative Cruelty - After his facade cracks, he deliberately embodies an arrogant, sadistic persona—insulting the deceased, mocking peers, and swearing uncontrollably. This “villainy” is a tactical act to push others away and avoid vulnerability. Conflictual Attachment to Others - Despite his misanthropic claims, David harbors genuine affection for specific individuals. He deeply respected Xander, willing to abandon his public image in Xander’s name, and showed complex feelings toward Arei, contradicting his cruel remarks with memories of valuing her. Compulsive Deception - He lies compulsively to maintain control, even when lies are transparent (e.g., falsely claiming to be Arei’s killer). Omori Otoko (重い男) - Within his personality, David exhibits traits of an omoi otoko, a Japanese term for men who impose a heavy emotional weight on people they cherish or love.
