Western-based wellness is remarkably quick to locate the problem within the individual before ever interrogating the systems around them. But what if some of what we call dysfunction is actually a deeply intelligent adaptation to environments that are dysfunctional themselves? I’m always musing on the language & the meaning that shapes our world, our sense of self, our culture. Diagnoses can be valuable, can bring relief, understanding, community, accommodation & access to support. But they’re just one lens. One framework. I believe we need to widen the lens. This is why I am a fan of approaches like the biopsychosocial model. Because when we only ask: “What’s wrong with this person?” we risk missing the equally important question: “What happened here & what kind of world is this person being expected to survive in?” Sometimes healing means a lot of unlearning & returning & reconnecting. As always, this is a very nuanced conversation & I’m only willing to have it with people who can hold that nuance. This is more of a musing than a solutions oriented post. I think it’s good to reflect, to discuss, to allow. Not seeking a perfect answer, I don’t know that there is one. But allowing breathing room for pondering 〰️ - - .Disclaimer: This is not to deny the reality of certain conditions/experiences. This is simply a reminder that sometimes what we carry is not pathology, but a natural response to unnatural systems. #healing #wellness #capitalism #nervoussystem #dejavu
