I’m a medical social worker and a few times I’ve told patients/families to access their mychart results. It really upsets me when this is held from them when the patient and/or SDM is capable and needs this information to make informed decisions and give legal consent.

It shouldn’t be released before it gets reviewed outpatient either. Even if the result isn’t bad medical words can sound very scary to someone who doesn’t know them.

Nah hell no. As a nurse and a patient, hold these providers and hospitals accountable for every single time they say “everything is normal” because I’ll be damned if I’m leaving a hospital without seeing my results on paper for myself be it by my chart or YOUR chart. 90% of these hospitals cannot be trusted, especially if you’re a woman.

so i have a different opinion about this , I was in the middle of an eptopic pregnancy I knew something was wrong had all the signs was in the ER awaiting HCG numbers for blood work . I watched those numbers come in for 5 days straight i watched them grow but not double all before a provider could see me in the mornings and it gave me time to process ect. now I understand this isn't for everyone but I appreciated not having to wait until a dr. could get to me 5 - 8 hours later

my doctor wouldve lied to me if I didnt see the results before she did. I spent 2 years fighting for an endometriosis diagnosis and she was going to skip over it. should've seen her face when I pointed out what it said in the report.

When I was high risk pregnant with my son I had to remind drs constantly of things I was seeing on my chart that they were ignoring. My son wouldn’t be alive if I hadn’t see the results first and pushed for help. It’s a hard situation forsure.

The only reason I found out I had Hashimotos was because my results got released. Doctor said everything was fine while my thyroid was COVERED in cysts.

I think we underestimate how intelligent and resourceful non-medical people are, but we’re also used to anxiety and expect them to be okay with waiting. I’m a nurse and if I had possible life-altering issues, I would want to know asap even if it isn’t my specialty so I can research and be prepared. People don’t have to check their results but should be able to if they want, with or without a doc.

Stop making your jobs issues the patients fault. The solution isn’t lack of access or less informed patients. It’s physicians who show up…..which often means hospitals requiring more face to face time and paying accordingly

Hey so as a nurse I tell patients “ you have a right to your records and I can pull them up on the computer here and we can read them together. I can not diagnose you but I can tell you what it means or help you understand what it is saying- the doctor will come and give you further detail on plan of action and diagnosis and follow up. But let’s talk about this and maybe come up with some questions to write down and ask the doctor when you see them. “ it’s called patient centered care for a reason and we have to empower them in their health journey through access and understanding

You are right- unpopular- if I had to wait for a physician to do their job to find out a life changing diagnosis I wouldn’t know for 10-12 business days

They are MY results.. I gladly want them when available! It’s also my choice to read or not read them. But not having to wait 3-5 business years for over worked , under staffed facilities that may or may not call… or may or may not give the correct answers!
