Let’s make a plan instead of panic. ❤️ With kindergarten vaccine exemptions rising, parents—especially those with children who aren’t fully protected against measles—should know before an exposure happens what the next steps could look like. A few things to discuss with your pediatrician: 🩺 If your child is unvaccinated, ask now about what would happen after a measles exposure and whether MMR vaccine or immune globulin could be appropriate depending on timing, age, and medical circumstances. 🏫 Understand your school/local health department’s exclusion rules. During an outbreak, susceptible children may need to stay home for up to 21 days after exposure—and potentially longer if exposures continue. 💉 If your child has only received one MMR dose, ask whether it makes sense to give the second dose now rather than waiting. The routine second dose is recommended at ages 4–6, but it can be given earlier when appropriate. 🛡️ Two doses of MMR are about 97% effective at preventing measles. If your child is fully vaccinated, you’ve already given them excellent protection. And please: don’t give extra vitamin A or cod liver oil to prevent measles. Vitamin A is used under medical supervision in children who have measles; it does not replace vaccination or prevent infection, and excessive vitamin A can be toxic. You don’t have to wait until an exposure notice comes home to figure this out. Talk with your pediatrician now, know your local risk, and make a plan that works for your family.
