I’ve seen so many divisive stances on the BAFTAs that I just wanted to remind us all that multiple things can be true at once and this was a devastating and horrendous situation all round. John Davidson, who has Tourette’s said in an involuntary tic the n word when Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting their award. There was a duty of care to both Michael and Delroy (who weren’t apologised to immediately after this incident), as well as one to John, who cannot control his disability, and one to the audience at home and it feels as though no one was taken care of in this situation and that’s devastating all round. It could have been bleeped or cut entirely to save 3 million people from hearing this incredibly racist, degrading word said on live TV while Michael and Delroy were on stage, and this would have protected everyone in an incredibly difficult and horrendous situation. I really feel for everyone involved and I hope that broadcasters learn from this situation. @India Ysabel 🍿 was in the audience and did a great video about what actually happened - the introduction to John and the audience being informed about his Tourette’s and the potential for offensive involuntary tics throughout the evening, for which he received a round of applause as this was a big night for him with a biopic about his life being nominated for so many awards. The BBC and BAFTA have since apologised for both airing the slur and to Michael and Delroy for not addressing it on the night too. If it had been a swear word it would have been edited out so I think it’s extremely disappointing that the slur was not bleeped. #baftas #fyp #bafta #tvseries
