We talk so much about the miracle of a baby being born. But we don’t talk enough about what happens to the woman. The woman who carried the baby. The woman whose body changes. The woman who may be exhausted, overwhelmed, scared, or quietly struggling. The woman who is expected to immediately know how to be a mother while she is still learning who she is again. And sometimes, the hardest part is that everyone asks about the baby. “Is the baby sleeping?” “Is the baby eating?” “How much does the baby weigh?” But how often do we ask: “How are YOU?” That question can mean everything to a new mother. As a mother of four, I know how easy it is to pour every part of yourself into your children and forget that you need care, too. Maybe that is why the words “When a baby is born, a mother is born too” have always meant so much to me. Because motherhood isn’t just about welcoming a baby into the world.
