@uraan_stories_official: Baghdad Turned Old Cloth Into Paper 1,200 Years Ago. More than 1,200 years ago, papermakers in the Islamic world were producing writing sheets from fibrous material such as linen and old textile waste. The material was soaked and beaten until it became pulp. That pulp was mixed with water inside a large vat. A craftsman dipped a fine-screened wooden mould into the mixture and lifted it out. The water drained away—but a thin layer of fibres stayed on the screen and became a sheet of paper. The sheet was pressed and dried before receiving another important treatment: starch sizing. Rice, wheat, or similar starch preparations helped create a smoother writing surface and stopped ink from soaking deeply into the fibres. Finally, the sheet could be polished with a smooth stone. By the tenth century, Baghdad even had a famous booksellers’ market containing around one hundred sellers. A discarded piece of cloth could end up carrying science, medicine, poetry, mathematics, and history. #Baghdad #PaperMaking #IslamicHistory #AncientTechnology #HistoryTok
