@boundbymemory: I think sometimes we accidentally treat every person who loses interest as if they did something wrong to us. Someone can genuinely be excited about you in the beginning, genuinely think you’re attractive, genuinely enjoy your company, and then learn more about you and realize the two of you aren’t compatible. That doesn’t necessarily mean they were pretending before. That’s literally what dating is supposed to help you figure out. You might discover you want completely different futures, your values don’t align, your communication styles clash, the chemistry isn’t developing, or you simply don’t feel the connection you initially thought you would. And yes, being on the receiving end of that realization can hurt. Rejection hurts even when the person rejecting you handles it perfectly. But somebody deciding you’re not right for them isn’t the same thing as deciding there’s something wrong with you. You’re not supposed to be compatible with everybody who initially likes you. The important part is how someone handles that change of heart. Don’t breadcrumb someone because you enjoy their attention. Don’t keep treating them like a partner while privately knowing you’ll never commit. Don’t disappear without explanation after creating genuine emotional intimacy if a respectful conversation is possible. Just be honest: “I’ve enjoyed getting to know you, but I don’t think this is the right connection for me.” Dating requires enough vulnerability to accept that either person is allowed to reach that conclusion. The goal isn’t to make every person who pursues you eventually choose you. It’s for two people to get to know each other honestly enough to discover whether they should choose each other—and to have enough maturity to walk away respectfully when the answer is no.
