What she saw next made her pull out her phone and refuse to look away. 🧵 Here's what went down in her own words: "Here we go I was having a day with my daughter grocery shopping at the Big Rapids Walmart as we were leaving we heard was LEAVE ME ALONE, LEAVE ME ALONE as we got closer is was a young black special needs boy with his case manager out shopping and was being antagonize by the Walmart security to the point where they grabbed him, threw him on the ground and they both were choking him." The young man — identified by witnesses as Levi — was crying out: "They're choking me!" Raspberry didn't hesitate. She stepped in, started recording, and confronted security: "No, it wasn't my business, but how can I turn my head and keep going knowing what they were doing were wrong." And when security realized they were being recorded? They tried to play victim. "You already know yup they tried to play victim when he realized that someone saw what they were doing to him." Then the switch-up happened. Raspberry says the whole Walmart came outside with their phones, calling police and trying to portray Levi as the aggressor. "He was just filled with joy that someone else can tell his story and what Walmart employees were trying to do to him now the whole Walmart out here with their phones, calling the police trying to portray as this young man attacked them!!" Levi hugged Raspberry multiple times and told her: "You're my sweetheart." The man who was choked thanked the woman who saved him. And Walmart security? They called the cops on him. --- 🧩 Autism Awareness & Public Safety This incident highlights a critical issue: individuals with autism face disproportionately high risks of harm during encounters with security or law enforcement. Research shows that nearly half of all autistic individuals have had an interaction with police. Among autistic teens and adults, 16% had at least one police interaction in the past 18 months — and of those encounters, 19% involved physical restraints and 30% resulted in the person being transported to an emergency department. Meltdowns are often misinterpreted as aggression or defiance. Sensory overload, processing delays, and communication differences can escalate situations quickly — especially when security personnel aren't trained to recognize or respond appropriately. What could have prevented this? · Training: Security staff trained to recognize and de-escalate situations involving neurodivergent individuals · Patience: Waiting for police instead of using physical force · Awareness: Understanding that a person with special needs may not respond to commands the way others would Raspberry, who works in a memory care unit, is trained to deal with people who have behavioral, mental, and autistic disabilities. She knew exactly what she was seeing — and she knew it was wrong. This isn't just about one Walmart incident.
