14 hours/day for 21 days. No holidays. While most of Utah is celebrating Pioneer Day today, firefighters are here — because the fire doesn’t care what’s on the calendar. The pioneers who crossed the plains didn’t stop when it got hard. They didn’t take days off because the terrain was brutal or the weather was unforgiving. They put their heads down and kept moving. That spirit is what today is supposed to celebrate — and honestly, it’s the same spirit that drives every person standing on a fire line. This is what wildland firefighting actually looks like. It’s not glamorous. It’s not a 9-to-5. It’s sleeping in spike camps, eating whatever you can find, working through the night when the fire decides it doesn’t care about your schedule, and waking up the next morning to do it again. People ask me why I do this. The answer isn’t complicated. Someone has to. The forests don’t protect themselves. The homes on the edge of those forests don’t protect themselves. And when a fire makes a run and threatens everything a family has built — somebody has to be there to hold the line. Joe Rogan said it best. Right now, somewhere in the world, someone is outworking you. In wildland fire, that person is every single crew member standing next to me in these photos. These aren’t influencers. These aren’t people chasing clout. These are people who showed up, laced up their boots, grabbed their tools, and went to work in conditions most people wouldn’t last an hour in. I want to be like them. 21 days of smoke in your lungs. 21 days of dirt in your gear. 21 days of going to bed exhausted and getting back up to do it again. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything. Happy Pioneer Day from the fire line. 🔥🇺🇸 #wildlandfire #firefighter #utah #pioneerday #joerogan
