Love him down, but nostalgia is clouding his perception. Globalism didn't just start with TikTok and American specifically Black American music is fundamental to all music around the globe. I know he didn't say that. It's what is being implied here. It kinda erases the very influence of dance, new jack swing, and hip-hop sounds that kpop has especially in the late 2000s and early 2010s. With all that said I do believe that kpop has its own sound and it still does it just that the market has changed so the sound has changed and that's not a bad thing. Plus, Seventeen has definitely fallen victim to the shortening of songs, and that goes with this sub-unit plus the evident UK garage sound in their album makes me side eye that statement even more. I am hard because Seventeen are my faves I don't like these generic statements the lack nuance.

I think one thing that's shifted that no one is discussing is the whole industry is less geared towards appealing to Japan than it was back in second gen. There were elements of everything in kpop that were chosen because it all appealed to the Japanese market. So it mirrored what was popular of an American sound and a global influence specifically in Japan and how the sound had been adapted there. And Japan's music industry is a fascinating case study in thriving with absolutely no dependency on international consumption. Japan preferred very closely matching custom looks in MVs, so kpop did that to cater to Japan. There were certain sounds that were preferred in Japan, so kpop often leaned towards that. Still influenced globally, but all chosen through the lenses of, "will the Japanese market like it?"

Yes I agree! He did have the overall idea, but they fly out foreign producers and choreographers, and expect the music do still have a big K-pop vibe. Korea loves trends, and they never really see the downfall of that. Music is all about individuality and self expression, so when you restrict that then it becomes lack luster
