INVASIVE ALERT: a very popular one among florists and flower farmers is “sweet autumn clematis” (clematis terniflora). Unfortunately it’s also INCREDIBLY FAST SPREADING and INVASIVE as a non-native in North America (remember, you cannot always rely on the Invasives list for your area because it is often not up-to-date and there is a lot of red tape in getting plants named to the invasives list. If a plant exhibits invasive tendencies and it’s not native, assume that it is invasive!). I remember, when I first started flower farming, one of the first arrangements that I bookmarked and saved, because I wanted to grow something similar, had loads of sweet autumn clematis spilling out of the sides of the vase. I was enamored! Not only that, it was said to be very easy to grow, and would spread quickly. We found this to be true, this is just one year of growth! Luckily, with our experience with our property these last few years, we have seen firsthand how dangerous invasives are, and have started being much more diligent in doing our research on what we are planting now. It is our responsibility as flower growers, gardeners, and florists to not use invasives! Luckily, if you were in the eastern half of the United States, there is a great alternative that looks nearly the same to this invasive version, called clematis virginiana! While it also spreads quickly, and can become aggressive, it actually serves ecosystem benefits as a native plant, but be aware that you will need to prune it and train it as a climber, and make sure it doesn’t take over your garden! Stay tuned for more PLANT THIS, NOT THAT editions this spring! Please like and share this one to spread the news! #plantthisnotthat #invasive #plantnative #flowergarden #farmerflorist #clematis #sweetautumnclematis #clematisvirginiana #cutflowergarden #cutflowers #flowerfarmer #gardentok
